Location of the fortifications at Luncavita, Rachelu (foreground, blue arrow) and Luncavita, Milan (distant shot, red arrow). Image processed from an aerial photograph by Dan Costea (Țentea 2018, 114 fig. 13)
The quadriburgium- type fortification from Rachelu was located on a rocky promontory, on the edge of the Danube floodplain, on the outskirts of the village. Access is made via an unpaved street of the village, 200 m from the road E 87 (DN22).
Nowadays, the fortification is mostly covered by the garden of a house. In 1991 rescue excavations were carried out which led to the identification of the north-east circular tower (diam. 3 m), built of stone blocks connected with mortar. The dimensions of the fortification (45 x 45 m) were taken based on the information provided by P. Polonic.
Recent investigations included field reconnaissance in April 2019, archival documentation, topographic measurements, drone data collection and altimetry plans and models.
