Location: Dobrosloveni Olt county (RAN: 126754.01.02; OT-I-m-A-08527.02)
The Romula civil settlement became a municipium during Hadrian’s time, being then attested Romulensium colony in the time of Philippus Arabs, in the year 248 AD , when the city walls were rebuilt manu militari (CIL III 8031 = ILS 510 = IDR II 324), using Bauvexillationen from the legions XXII Primigenia p.f. from Germania superior (AE 1940, 13 = IDR II 325; AE 1940, 14 = IDR II 326) and VII Claudia p. f. from Moesia superior (AE 1939, 28 = IDR II 327; CIL III 8047 = IDR II 328). Both legions had probably been involved in repelling the Carpi attack from 247 AD.
A complex with traces of several Roman military installations; it defended the Roman road along the Olt and an important crossing of the river; the three alleged Roman military installations are located in the centre of the present-day village, at the points “Dealul Morii” to the SE (C); “Biserica Veche” to the N (B) and “Cetate” to the W (A); all these points are superimposed by modern buildings (some researchers claim the existence of only two fortifications); research conducted by D. Tudor, Cr. M. Vlădescu1968-1976; auxiliary fort B, square plan, 100×100 m; auxiliary fort A, rectangular plan, 182×216 m; two phases of construction were observed: 1. wood and earth fort; rampart 7 m wide and 1.85 m height; trench with an opening of 6-7 m and a depth of 2.50 m; 2. stone fort, brick wall 1.95 m thick, built during Hadrian’s time; auxiliary fort C, rectangular plan; tegular material from the legions XI Claudia p. f., V Macedonica; VII Claudia Philippiana (IDR II 327; ILD 136) and XXII Primigenia Philippiana (IDR II 326; ILD 135); tegular material from numerus Syrorum Malvensium and cohort I Flavia Commagenorum (IDR II 382); one unit [ … ] I SAG, as yet unidentified (see Cohors I sagittariorum from Drobeta), appears on a tile fragment (ILD 140); the entire military complex began to function in the time of Trajan and was used until the half of the 3rd century or even the abandonment of the province.
