Abstract:

The ancient city of Sebastopolis, located within the borders of Sulusaray district of Tokat, is one of the prominent Roman cities of the Black Sea region. Located 69 km south of Tokat province, the city stands 36 km west of the Tokat-Sivas road, 30 km to Artova district and 5 km to Yeşilyurt district. With a history dating back to the Early Bronze Age, the city has been home to many civilizations. Its most brilliant periods took place during the Roman and Byzantine periods and architectural fragments of old buildings are scattered throughout the city center and surrounding villages. Many stone artefacts belonging to the Roman and Byzantine periods are found in various buildings, gardens, streets or in different structures such as spolia. This study investigates the garland-decorated stones brought from different parts of the ancient city of Sebastopolis to the Museum of Stone Artifacts and Mosaics of the Ancient City of Sebastopolis. It is unknown where the artifacts examined were found and where they were first used. However, the richness of the decoration observed in the examples shows that there is a unity of material, decoration and style in the city considering the other stone artifacts found in the city. This suggests that there were stonemasons who produced the decorative repertoire of the period and a local workshop in the city. Further excavations in the city will yield more reliable data in this regard in the future. The purpose of this study is to identify the artifacts, to date them by making iconographic and typological evaluations in the light of similar examples, and to contribute to the existing studies on the cultural history of the city.
