Fine Wares from the Late Roman ‘Principia’ at Capidava (III)

Abstract:

This paper presents the fine wares discovered during the 2017 and 2018 excavation campaigns in the Late Roman principia at Capidava. The catalogue comprises 21 vessels belonging to African Red Slip Ware, Pontic Red Slip Ware and Phocaean Red Slip Ware (Late Roman C). It completes the publication of the ceramic assemblage from the building, presented in three studies and comprising 116 pieces. Late Roman C Ware is predominant, accounting for 76% of the assemblage, while Hayes Form 3 represents approximately 58%. Most of the pottery dates to the 5th–6th centuries AD, when the headquarters building was reorganized and used as a residential space with storage rooms. Earlier material belongs to the official phase of the principia, while a smaller group dated to the late 6th and early 7th centuries indicates continued activity at Capidava during the final decades of Byzantine rule on the Lower Danube.
