Abstract:

Among the approximately thirty inscribed potsherds (mostly in Latin) originating from Porolissum (Roman province of Dacia), one of them, discovered in 1983 near the Temple of Bêl, bears four letters of Aramaic appearance on its convex side, incised after firing. The inscribed word is introduced by the particle l-, indicating ownership or attribution; this is consistent with other postherds of the same type, which feature anthroponyms. While the reading is not unequivocal, two possible interpretations point toward Aramaic or Arabic-type anthroponymy, both of which are equally plausible. The writing itself bears a closer resemblance to Palmyrene script than to a Nabataean-type script.
