Abstract:

The cult of Roman Mithras in Pannonia Inferior, and particularly in the territorium of Aquincum (Budapest, Hungary), has left us a rich corpus of figurative and epigraphic monuments, as well as small finds. The archaeology of religion in Aquincum – one of the richest urban centres in votive monuments north of the Alps – shows the presence of six archaeologically attested Mithras sanctuaries (mithraea), which makes the city the third richest concentration of Mithraic sites after Rome and Ostia. This article will examine the material evidence, social aspects, and museological perspectives of the cult in Aquincum in the six archaeologically attested mithraea, including the most recently discovered mithraeum in 2023.

Der Kult des römischen Mithras in Pannonia Inferior, insbesondere im Gebiet von Aquincum (dem heutigen Budapest, Ungarn), hat ein reiches Korpus an figürlichen und epigraphischen Denkmälern sowie Kleinfunden hinterlassen. Die Religionsarchäologie von Aquincum – einem der fundreichsten urbanen Zentren für Votivmonumente nördlich der Alpen – bezeugt die Existenz von sechs archäologisch nachgewiesenen Mithräen, womit die Stadt nach Rom und Ostia die dritthöchste Konzentration mithräischer Kultstätten aufweist. Der vorliegende Beitrag untersucht das materielle Fundspektrum, die sozialen Aspekte sowie museologische Perspektiven des Kultes in Aquincum anhand der sechs archäologisch belegten Mithräen, darunter auch das im Jahr 2023 neu entdeckte Mithräum.
