Abstract:

Articolul de față își propune să prezinte un prim lot de vase din categoria ceramicii fine de masă importate (vasa escaria) provenind din campaniile arheologice 2013–2015 de la Capidava. Obiectivul arheologic la care facem referire este un edificiu de mari dimensiuni (aproximativ 23 × 16 m), prevăzut cu absidă orientată spre sud și care era cunoscut în publicațiile mai vechi sub numele de Principia romană târzie de la Capidava. Vesela prezentată de noi (Çandarli, Phocean Ware/Late Roman C, respectiv African Red Slip Wares) a fost descoperită în colțul de nord al edificiului, în contexte de epocă romană-târzie (secolele IV–V p. Chr.) și bizantină-timpurie (secolul al VI-lea p. Chr.). Lotul de piese cuprinde fragmente ceramice de la 31 de vase (castroane și platouri) utilizate pentru servitul mesei. Dintre acestea se evidențiază vasul cu numărul de catalog 7, aparținând formei ARS Hayes 103A. Detaliile sale morfologice și în mod special cele ale buzei indică o formă timpurie în evoluția tipului respectiv, dar mai ales legătura cu formele ARS Hayes 84 și 86, postulată anterior de către J.W. Hayes. Vasul este un unicum produs foarte probabil la începutul secolului al VI-lea p. Chr. și fără analogie cunoscută în acest moment în literatura de specialitate. Această contribuție se dorește a fi prima dintr-o serie preliminară dedicată obiectivului arheologic respectiv, pregătind publicarea monografică a tuturor categoriilor de artefacte după epuizarea cercetărilor arheologice la edificiul absidat.

The article discusses the first batch of wares from the category of imported, fine dinner wares (vasa escaria), coming from 2013-2015 archaeological excavations from Capidava. The archaeological objective we are referring to is a large building (about 23×16 m ) with a southern-oriented apse, that was known in the older publications as the Capidava late Roman Principia. The wares we are presenting (Çandarli, Phocean Ware/Late Roman C, respectively African Red Slip Wares) were discovered in the building’s northern corner, in the late-Roman (4th-5th centuries A.D.) and early-Byzantine (6th century A.D.) age. The batch includes shards from 31 vessels (bowls and plateaus) used for eating. Catalogue item no. 7 stand out, belonging to the ARS Hayes 103A type. Its morphological details and especially those of the rim indicate an early shape in the evolution of the respective type, but especially the connection with the ARS Hayes 84 and 86, previously postulated by J.W. Hayes. The vessel is a unicum most likely produced at the beginning of the 6th century A.D, with no known analogies in the specialised literature. This contribution aims to be the first one in a preliminary series focused on the respective archaeological objective, in preparation of a monograph with all the artefact categories following the complete archaeological research of the apse building.
