Shadows and Flames: Oil Lamps from the Basilica with Crypt Sector at Histria (2002-2023)

Abstract:

This study presents a comprehensive analysis of a ceramic lamp assemblage comprising 52 specimens recovered through systematic archaeological excavations carried out between 2002 and 2023 in the Basilica with crypt Sector at Histria. Most of the lamps are fragmentary and date from the Classical period to Late Antiquity, reflecting a broad geographic range that includes Asia Minor, the Black Sea region, Africa, as well as local production. The research examines their typology and chronology, encompassing Classical and early Roman forms, Pontic and Danubian types, African imports, imitations, and locally produced handmade lamps. Despite the limited number of artifacts, the findings are analyzed within both local and regional contexts, providing insights into the occupation and functional dynamics of this area over time.
