Abstract:

Fibulae are functional jewelry used in ancient times, especially for fastening clothes, and are today considered to be the ancestors of safety pins. Used for cultic and ornamental purposes, these objects were produced in different periods and cultures with various shapes and materials. These cultic status and ornaments also show the artistic understanding of the period to which they belong and the social status of the wearer. Fibulae are among the artifacts that provide important cultural and historical clues in archaeological excavations. The fibulae in the Selçuk University Museum are also among the important artifacts that stand out with their historical and cultural values. In this study, 16 fibulae donated to the museum will be examined. The majority of these artifacts are

Phrygian fibulae, which were used as death gifts in tombs. These sixteen fibulae are divided into four types and three subgroups of type XII within four types. The Phrygian, Geometric, Urartian and Roman fibulae in the museum collection are dated between the 11th century BC and the 4th century AD. The fibulae were produced in open and closed casting techniques, and the material of manufacture is mainly bronze, but also silver.
